Delivery Address: [City, State ZIP]1 Overview
Box Hub is required to collect sales tax on orders delivered to states where we have established "nexus" — a legal connection triggered by factors like physical presence, delivery activity, or sales volume in that state. This policy explains our general approach; specific tax treatment can vary by order and is confirmed on your invoice.
This page is provided for general informational purposes and does not constitute tax advice. Contact your own tax advisor for guidance specific to your business or purchase.
2 Where We Collect Sales Tax
Box Hub currently collects and remits sales tax on orders delivered to the states listed below. This list changes as our nexus footprint grows — if your state isn't listed, tax may still apply based on your local jurisdiction's rules, or may not be collected by us but could be owed by you directly as use tax.
| State | Sales Tax Collected | Notes |
|---|---|---|
| New York | Yes | Home state — physical nexus |
| [State] | Yes | [Nexus basis, e.g. economic nexus] |
| [State] | Yes | [Nexus basis] |
| [State] | Not Yet | Customer may owe use tax directly |
3 What's Taxable
In states where Box Hub collects sales tax, the taxable amount generally includes the container purchase price and may include certain fees, depending on state law:
- New, used, one-trip, Cargo Worthy, WWT, refrigerated, office, and storage containers
- Modified/custom container work (labor and materials, where taxable under state law)
- Accessories: locks, lock boxes, vents, ramps, shelving
- Delivery and logistics charges, where the state taxes shipping as part of the sale
Some states exempt separately stated delivery charges, or tax labor and materials differently on modified containers. Your invoice reflects the correct treatment for your delivery address.
4 How Tax Is Calculated
Sales tax is calculated automatically at checkout, or by your sales specialist for phone/email orders, using the combined state and local rate that applies to your delivery address — not our New York headquarters, unless your delivery address is also in New York. Rates are updated regularly to reflect current state and local requirements.
5 Rentals & Financed Purchases
Rental containers may be taxed on each periodic rental payment rather than a single upfront amount, consistent with how your state taxes tangible property rentals. Financed purchases are taxed on the full purchase price at the time of sale, in line with standard retail installment sale rules, regardless of your payment schedule with the lender.
6 Tax-Exempt Purchases
If you qualify for a sales tax exemption — for example, purchase for resale, agricultural use, or qualifying nonprofit status — you can submit a valid exemption certificate for the state of delivery before your order ships.
- Email a completed, signed exemption certificate to help@boxhub.com with your order number
- Certificates must be valid for the state where your container will be delivered
- We're unable to apply exemptions retroactively once an order has been invoiced and tax collected
7 Invoices & Records
Every order includes an itemized invoice showing the taxable subtotal, the tax rate applied, and the total tax collected, sent to your email on file. Keep this invoice for your records; it's your primary reference if you need to reconcile tax paid with your own accounting or file for a state-level exemption refund.
8 Changes to This Policy
Sales tax laws and our nexus footprint change over time. We update this page as needed to reflect current practice; the "Last Updated" date above reflects the most recent revision. The tax shown on your specific order invoice governs that transaction.

Sales Tax FAQ
Does Box Hub charge sales tax on shipping containers?
We charge sales tax on orders delivered to states where Box Hub has a sales tax collection obligation. Tax is calculated based on your delivery address at checkout.
How is sales tax calculated on my order?
Tax is calculated using the applicable state and local rate for your delivery address, applied to the taxable portion of your order, which may include the container price and certain fees depending on state law.
Can I buy a container tax-exempt?
If you qualify for a tax exemption, such as resale, agricultural, or nonprofit use, submit a valid exemption certificate for your state before your order ships. We cannot apply exemptions retroactively after an order has been invoiced.
Do rentals and financed purchases get taxed differently?
Rentals may be taxed on each rental payment rather than a single upfront amount, depending on state law. Financed purchases are taxed on the full purchase price at the time of sale, consistent with standard retail installment rules.
Will I get a tax invoice for my records?
Yes. Every order includes an itemized invoice showing the taxable amount, tax rate applied, and total tax collected for your records.
